A hernia commonly happens when part of an organ, such as the bowel, protrudes through the muscle wall, usually in your abdomen or groin, of the cavity in which it is normally contained. Internal hernias are rare and protrude through an internal hole which cannot be felt.
What types of hernia are there?
Common types of hernia include inguinal hernias (groin), femoral hernias (upper thigh/groin), incisional hernias (surgical scars), umbilical hernias (belly button), epigastric hernias (upper abdomen), and hiatal hernias (through the diaphragm).
How do I know if I have a hernia?
You may have a hernia if you feel a new or worsening bulge in your abdomen or groin that may disappear when you lie down, along with pain or discomfort, especially when you cough, strain, or lift.
Hernias are dangerous because the protruding organ or tissue can become trapped and lose its blood supply, a condition called a strangulated hernia. This cuts off blood flow, which can cause tissue to die and lead to serious complications like an intestinal obstruction, requiring urgent medical and surgical treatment. Immediate medical attention is needed if you experience symptoms such as a red, purple, or tender bulge, sudden worsening pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, or difficulty passing gas or stool.
What should I do if I experience these symptoms?
You should go directly to A&E to be diagnosed and treated. A strangulated or obstructed hernia needs to be treated quickly within a short period of time to avoid complications such as bowel gangrene.
What if my bulge/hernia is just uncomfortable and unsightly?
You should ask to be referred to a specialist by your GP or you can make a self-referral by booking a consultation directly with the specialist.
How do you treat a hernia?
The main treatment for most hernias is surgery to push the tissue back into place and reinforce the weakened area, often with a mesh. Surgery can be performed as open surgery with a larger incision or laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery through small cuts, with the latter often having a quicker recovery.

During an acid reflux attack, remain upright to use gravity to your advantage, loosen tight clothing, and take small sips of water to help wash acid back into your stomach. You can also take over-the-counter antacids such as Gaviscon or Rennie, for quick relief and practice deep, slow breathing to reduce stress. If you have severe or frequent symptoms, or chest pain with other symptoms, book a consultation to see me.
